About

Alt Hostel

Alt Hostel sits on Saint Paul Est, one of Montreal's most atmospheric streets. The location is a traveller's dream: the Old Port is an 8-minute walk away and Montreal City Hall is just around the corner. Housed above a restaurant and a nightclub, the energy of the neighbourhood is always close by.

The hostel keeps things simple and modern. Expect parquet floors, curtains on the bunks, and lockers in the dorms. The shared kitchen is there if you want to cook, and the staff are consistently praised for their helpfulness. It's an adults-only property, which keeps the vibe calm and focused on rest or socialising, whatever you're after.

In brief

What works, what to weigh

+

Strengths

4 reasons to book
  • Unbeatable Old Montreal location — An 8-minute walk from the Old Port and right beside Montreal City Hall, with Bonsecours Market, restaurants, nightlife, and Chinatown all nearby.
  • Friendly and helpful staff — Guests repeatedly mention the team going out of their way with recommendations, earplugs, and luggage help.
  • Great value for money — With rates from £25 per night and a complimentary breakfast, guests feel they get a lot for their budget.
  • Clean and modern facilities — Guests note clean rooms, bathrooms, and common areas, with comfortable bunks, reading lights, USB ports, and well-separated showers.

Worth weighing

4 to weigh
  • No elevator and stairs to climb — The hostel is above a restaurant and a nightclub, so expect a climb with luggage. It might be a hassle for those with heavy bags.
  • Potential noise from nightlife below — Being on top of a nightclub and surrounded by bars means street noise can be part of the experience. Earplugs are provided, but light sleepers should be prepared.
  • Adults-only policy — The hostel does not accommodate children, which could be limiting for families.
  • Breakfast is simple — While included, the continental breakfast is basic – bread, butter, and coffee – and some guests found the options limited.
